The Human Rights in Education Trust (NZ registered charity CC21672) was established in 2007 by partners in the collaborative Human Rights in Education initiative -- developing quality education, a culture of respect and responsibility, and effective citizenship, by building learning communities that explore, promote and live human rights and responsibilities (human rights-based education). The Trust offers a range of support to education agencies, particularly schools and early childhood education centres, in meeting New Zealand’s commitment to the right to an education that respects and helps realise human rights. Other key partners in the Initiative are the Children’s Commissioner, Human Rights Commission, Global Focus, Peace Foundation, YouthLaw. It is backed by former NZ governors-general Sir Paul Reeves and Dame Silvia Cartwright, and made possible by financial assistance from the Todd Foundation and other generous contributors.
