Fantastic little Museum with plenty to see as the story of Wellington is explained. Many of the exhibits are interactive which makes our children explore with their curiosity. Make sure you go all the way to the attic space, as it truly is full of great things linking to the past.

Museum is small and consists of 4 floors of random origins. The maritime floor was the most cohesive and family friendly. All other floors left us wanting more. The Māori part of the exhibit was so disappointing and the way the taonga were displayed felt like a bit of an afterthought. Top floor had some cool Wellington/NZ history pieces, but very random. An OK placeholder if Te Papa is closed.
Just as delightful as I remember! Each floor is crammed with fascinating and meaningful exhibits and the place feels very clean and well maintained. Highly recommended, vastly superior to te papa.
A must-visit Wellington establishment - one of the most underrated attractions in the city. I'll be coming back to spend longer here and do a more full exploration. Highly recommend this to locals as well as visitors! Also there is an excellent selection of local goods in their shop from small local businesses.
My new favorite museum in Welly! We've been here for 7 years or so now and this was our first visit. We have always joked about the wild claims advertised outside this museum - "voted in the top 50 museums in the world" or some such. Now I'm having to eat 7 years of my own words. This place is great! The museum is well set out - just the right amount of information and interactive displays to keep adults and toddlers well entertained. There is a nautical theme running through the museum but it is just as much a history of Wellington. My favourite part though is the feel of the place. It is comfortable. Lighting and wood make the place seem really cosy. I just enjoyed being in the space. Don't be like us. Visit soon and visit often.
Really underrated little museum and there is actually lots in there! Great Wellington history around shipping etc and some nice kiwiana history. Great for kids too although not much hands on exhibits like there is at Te Papa. Well worth a visit
It was great museum to take kids too. Lots of to touch and play for them. I love learning the history of the port city Wellington. The outside of the museum, there is " Capital E ". It is a play room for small children. Good thing is it is free too!
Great little Museum with a massive variety of local exhibits and history. Lots of cool movies and interactive displays for the whole family. Much bigger on the inside than it looks on the out. The Wahine exhibit was a highlight. Highly recommend.
