I love getting out into beautiful NZ bush and even though this is a very tough climb on the mountainbike, it's a very enjoyable downhill back down. I was told that the gorse and blackberry can be hard to negotiate at times, but when we went, all the overhanging nastiness had been trimmed back for an adventure race through here, which was pretty good timing for us. We spotted a wallaby in the park, which are deemed as pests, so reported it to DOC, who encourage reporting sightings.

Two of us in our late 50's cycled a total of 12kms of the track which is wide enough, with ups and downs. Got off Electric bikes a couple of times but not for long! In Winter it would be muddy and a bit slippery I would think. But we enjoyed our cycle in March 2019!
Great location. Bit outta the way. But if you enjoy nature and great walks this be for you. Its 17kms to the okataina camp. Other wise a 13 odd k walk to the end of the road where the lodge is.. bring good sturdy footwear. Gets sodden and muddy.. be aware of hunters out in this area as well.
Best when dry. Gnarly washed out down hill in places. A few drops. We enjoyed it but my partner found it a little tough. Not a novice trail in its current state unless you are happy walking alot.
We rode MTB's from Okareka to Okataina - Im not going to lie this was a tough 'ride' as most of the middle 5-6km was unrideable due to the gorse and huge ruts. But the downhill pleasure at the end was sublime so we finished up with glee. No need to do it again. Dont go if you are less then a grade 3 rider, allow 3 hours. There was mobile service along the way which made us feel safer. No views unless you do the trig.
