A huge missed opportunity for a tent campground. You can only camp in a self-contained vehicle, limiting this campground to the few elite who can afford such vehicles. A few facilities could easily handle a campsite for tents with a small fee to cover management and cleaning. There were only about 10-20 camper-vans parked here in a site that can take probably 1000. And this is during one of New Zealand’s busiest domestic tourism seasons! Every campground we have been to this summer has been full. There are relatively new trees coming up at the self-contained camping area and they are all exotic!! (Oaks by the look). The only good thing about this area is the free parking to access the lake, with some shade.

Gorgeoys, quiet slice of paradise. As you come down the dirt road, the right hand side of the bay has more beach and sand, the left is more secluded...but has more rocks.
Great place to swim, ride a bike go for a walk kick a ball around... you can do so much to utilise this great reserve
Nice spot and you can freedom camp here in a self contained vehicle. Hoon alarm at 2am though. Went on for about half hour. Wheel marks on the grass, someone decided to do donuts around the toilet. Went for a snorkel and collected a bag full of plastic rubbish out of the lake.
A great place to kick back and unwind
One of the last great freedom camping spots near the lake
Large areas to park with access to the lake.
Beautiful views of Lake Taupo and the mountains from the upper field. Scenic freedom camping!
