Drove from Picton to Hammer Springs via Molesworth station. Great experience except for google maps taking us over the Jollies pass route that is in very poor repair. Ok for us as in a four wheel drive but most would struggle to make it over. Jacks pass is the recommended route.
Awesome place to visit. camping sites only at Cobb Cottage at the Awatere end. Photos looking east from the Station.
The 200k drive through the 187000 hectare Molesworth Station is a must do but make sure the weather forecast is good. The dirt road is ok for none 4wd vehicles and seems to be well maintained. Allow 4 to 6 hours to drive from the turn off from sh1 south of Blenheim to Hanmer Springs
Great bit of real kiwi gravel road and expansive outback, and mountain scree slope vistas. Great river views, and single lane wooden bridges with no railings. Road rises quite high. Open usually in the summer, for the appropriately equipped. Check road status first. Even saw a drover on horseback working cattle. Also two hares rushed across the road in front of us, stopped briefly immediately to mate, then rush away.
A great long drive through the station, as a scenic alternate route to State Highway 1.
Great drive with awesome scenery. Toilets are top notch for long drops.
Great drive through the Awetere Valley from Blenheim. Great snowy mountain views with clean crisp air. The station is pristine. Night time stars must be awesome.
