Rewarded with spectacular views over majestic mountains and shimmering lakes. It's a rather tough uphill climb so best to be fit for this walk and prepared for all weather. Take it easy on the way down as it can be a strain on the ole knees.

This is a popular track, so be sure to come early in case you have to park elsewhere. The track is about 16km return via same track, about 56 hours in total. If you don't have sufficient time, choose the spot you will be returning. The view is perfect at every spot, just gets better when you go higher. Take a day to walk here and enjoy the magnificent panorama view of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountains.

One of the best views ever.!!! Totally worth waking up early in the morning and walking uphill for quite a while. The view from the top of Roys Peak is stunning and rewarding. I really enjoyed starting the hike in the dark only seeing other hikers torch lights along their way, it isn't crowded at that time and no worries to find a parking. Take some tea and enjoy a little breakfast at the top when sun rises. Might consider taking some warm clothing and even some gloves in summer too as it can get pretty windy. I loved it !!

Beautiful place with stunning views. Absolutely must-see when in South Island, New Zealand. People often go just to a viewing point to take those "Instagram" photos but views from the top are even greater. We didn't get the best weather and not all the pictures were perfect but still we couldn't be disappointed.

Very rewarding hike with some of the best views and photo opportunities in NZ. Taking just under 2 hrs to ascend and an 1.5 hours down I thoroughly enjoyed the hike as it is very beautiful but easy hike, the path is wide single track the entire way with minimal challenge. If you are planning on taking a few stops on the way up and down I would recommend planning for 6 hours so take food, water and a full charge on your phone or camera for all the great photos you will get. Also if you are looking for a longer hike you can continue past Roys peak over a few more mountains which deliver some great views and take you down to Cardrona Valley Road. There is a toilet near the summit path but due to the popularity of the hike I would recommend planning ahead.

Awesome hike, one of the best I've been on between NZ, Hawaii, and the Canadian Rockies. In 2019 there was a bit of a line to take pictures at the Roy's Peak lookout as people can spend some time there once they have reached the top taking pictures. There is a stream on the way up that was very helpful for cooling off! Took us about 4.5 round trip, mind you we ran half the way down and waited at the top to get some photos as there was a small line of folks in front of us doing various poses. Lots of sheep and bunnies along the way! Make sure to bring lots of water. 1 litre per person was not enough for us. The parking has lots of room and there is a small donation bin at the front of the path. There is also a bathroom at the very bottom so make sure to go before you trek up!

the walk up to Roy's Peak is astounding and unbelievably popular given that it is an 6.5 km hike to the Viewpoint which includes 1000m of ascent. Many of those making the hike seem surprised to find it such a relentless climb, and may be ill-prepared in terms of footwear and suitable clothing for the alpine environment. On our most recent climb, you can see that it was steely grey and calm, with lots of mist wreathing around the mountains and making for magical misty views, but no sighting of Mt Aspiring. Please be prepared for a long hard, relentless climb which goes on for about 2 hours or 2 1/2 hours to the Viewpoint. The summit of Roys Peak is another 30-45 mins further on. Because this walk is so popular, there may be many people at the Viewpoint, creating a queue of people waiting to take their turn at capturing "the" shot.
