Absolute stunner and truly deserving of the "great walk" title. It's quite an easy walk but the cold is deceptive so be prepared with the right gear. I think this can be completed in about 6 hours. I recommend taking your time to look at the epic rock formations and enjoy the walk. Not every day you can visit a volcano

GET UP EARLY TO GET THE BEST VIEWS!! I left at 6am to see the sun rise over the top and 100% worth it. It you feel up to start from the North side of the crossing and then add on the extra walk to Pihanga Cafe. In total it's about a 28km hike, managed to complete it in just under 6 hours

It's really a great hiking experience, the view from the red crater is mesmerizing. Try to get less but important stuff with you as water and some food that you would really eat. The more you carry the more you will you get tired. It's tough yet doable

Well, well, well, remember those things that gives you pain but yet time and again you'll go back for more? Yes, doing this UNESCO World Heritage Site track does this to you. You will go back for more despite the pain you will experience completing the track. It has the views that takes one's breath away and every time, you will discover new things that you've not previously seen. Take you time to take in the views instead of just crossing off your bucket list by merely completing the track.

Amazing. What a walk! Stunning walk. The Devil's Step is a bit of a drag but do worth the climb. The crators are amazing. Best on a sunny day.

I walked the Tongariro Northern Circuit - which includes the Tongariro Alpine Crossing - in three days. Excellent weather in mid-February with a really dry summer. That means bring lots of water and apply sunscreen. Bring layers too because at around 2000m of altitude (around 6000 feet's) the wind can still be chilly there. The best section is definitely between Mangatepopo Hut and Oturere Hut (the famous Alpine Crossing). The section between Whakapapa and Mangatepopo is short and a good introduction to landscapes. Sunset is just wonderful at Mangatepopo Hut/Campsite and sunrise worth the early wake up in Oturere. The section between Oturere and back to Whakapapa is nice (mostly flat but ups-downs not to totally underestimate) and brings new perspectives of Tongariro and Ruapehu. However it is quite a long part. I'd still do it either that way or night in Mangatepopo Alpine Crossing and exit north. The best time to start from Mangatepopo for the crossing depends on what you want : - Early morning (5-10am) : Cooler weather, loads of people. Gonna have extra time after the hike. - Late morning (11am) : Can be hot on the ascent but almost not one since day-tripers are before you (you probably have a larger pack and won't catch up). Still plenty of time at the top. - Afternoon : Haven't heard about experiences but you might be alone and have different lighting, although maybe you'll feel a bit rushed. Of course that is valid only in case of good weather, otherwise let nature decide for you ;)
