Our District Opotiki District is the perfect place for a community that appreciates outdoor activities and a natural environment. With miles of open sea, 160 kms of coastline, 13 rivers and 11,200 hectares of bush and scrubland the district comprises 25% of the Bay of Plenty region and 50% of the Bay of Plenty coastline. 8,500+ people live here and each year 30,000+ visitors experience this great environment. The economy is driven primarily by agriculture, planted forests and horticulture. Council works to achieve the outcomes set by our community to ensure both present and future generations have: • Development and protection of the natural environment • Services and facilities that meet the communities needs • Fair and efficient leadership • A strong and distinctive community spirit • Purposeful work and learning opportunities • Development that supports the community • History and culture is treasured Council's Strategic Projects are set in our Long Term Plan. The most significant investment over the next 10 years is the Ōpōtiki Harbour Development Project which is set to revitalise the economy of the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Council is made up of two parts that work together for the benefit of the District. First is ‘the Council’ made up of one Mayor and 6 councillors. They make decisions, on behalf of the ratepayers, to meet the needs of the District. Second is the organisation consisting of staff who provide the services and the facilities/projects which deliver on the Council’s decisions. Working for Council Operations are on a scale where a supportive and competent team environment allows creativity and innovation. Professional development and achievement is important and positions are often multidisciplinary or comprise both strategic and operational activity. Council is a member of the Equal Employment Opportunities Trust Employers Group.
