Amazing bush to walk on, my kids really enjoyed it.

Quite Nice. However, in the southern hill side vegetation is invading the track at times. Long pants recommended, mainly to avoid getting scratched by gorse.
Pleasant short loop walk, suitable for kids. Saw a Karearea.
Excellent hiking trail for access to Mt McKerrow from the Catchpool car park in the Rimutaka Forest Park. Great views of Wellington, the Kaikoura coast and Cook Strait from multiple vantage-points. Stunning lowland broadleaf forest. Takes about an hour to Mt McKerrow.
I climbed down from north (Mt. Mckerrow summit) to south (clay forks) - track was steep, slippery and narrow. V much a 2 stage track, part closer to catchpool is fairly flat, whereas halfway in it gets much steeper. There are good footholds in the steeper sections. Id much rather climb the whakanui than here - this is much steeper closer to Mt. McKerrow. Track flattens and widens and becomes much easier to hike as you get closer to clay forks intersection. Not v windy at the lower parts but gets more exposed as you get closer to the summit. Not v muddy compared to the McKerrow track. One stunning lookout close to the summit.
Great track
