I get that it is a rare opportunity to trek an area like this plus it is free. More physically demanding than most expected judging by the comments along the way. First half is scenic but physical. Second becomes mind numbingly dull and once they add in hundreds of stairs sore knees suffer. Once people recover they will recall it fondly or a grand achievement. I recommend trekking poles.

A must for anyone looking for a day's hike. It takes about 8 hours for someone with medium fitness level. The views on top are amazing. So this is what new visitors should do if they have a car :: 1) Book a one way bus ride from Katetahi car parking to Mangatepopo car parking. 2) We drove to the Katetahi parking. The bus booking company has a parking area. Park your car there and hop on the bus. 3) The bus drops you at the Mangatepopo side of the trek. 4) Start from that side and you'll finish back at Katetahi. 5) Your car park will be a 10 mins walk from the finish. Hope this helps. Enjoy.

Amazing hike! Definitely make sure you're prepared and have enough stuff with you (water, snacks, clothes). Some of the most incredible views. Highlight for me was seeing the Emerald Lakes from above.

Beautiful views, an amazing hike!!, good challenge in some parts but plenty of spots to rest and take in the beautiful views, make sure you are prepared with water,snacks, bring warm clothes just incase

A really awesome walk. Best I've ever been on. Track was in good condition and well sign posted. Alot of information throughout the track and stunning views of nz double world heritage site
